The −1 goal polo player, founder of the Next Generation Polo Championship and CEO of Phoenix Polo Company on creating opportunities for emerging players, redefining the polo experience and shaping the future of the sport in Nigeria and Africa.
Polo has always been a sport shaped by generations. Experience is passed from one player to another, young riders learn from established professionals, and traditions survive because someone chooses to carry them forward. For Fatima Babangida Mohammed, that responsibility has become a personal ambition.
A −1 goal polo player herself, Fatima has developed her relationship with polo from two perspectives. She understands the sport from the saddle, but she has also become increasingly interested in everything that surrounds the game, from its commercial potential to the way tournaments are presented and how emerging players are given opportunities to grow.
That thinking has led to two major initiatives: Phoenix Polo Company, which she founded and leads as CEO, and the Next Generation Polo Championship, a platform created with the future of the sport firmly in mind.
“Polo is something I have developed a genuine passion for, both as a player and from the perspective of understanding the sport beyond what happens on the field.”
Building Phoenix Polo Company
Fatima's vision for Phoenix Polo Company comes from her belief that Nigerian polo has significant potential beyond what is currently being realised. The country already has an established polo tradition, talented players and a network of clubs and patrons, but she believes the sport can become more commercially attractive and accessible without losing the character that has made it special.
Phoenix was created to help clubs and tournament organisers strengthen that side of the sport. Its work includes areas such as sponsorship, brand partnerships, marketing, media exposure and the broader experience surrounding polo events. The idea is to complement the work already being done by clubs and organisers while helping them build stronger commercial platforms.
For Fatima, this is ultimately about changing how polo is presented. A tournament should not only be about what happens between the first and final chukkers. The atmosphere, hospitality, media, partnerships and interaction with spectators all contribute to how people experience the sport.
She believes that by bringing those elements together more effectively, Nigerian polo can attract new audiences and encourage businesses that may not traditionally have considered polo as a platform for investment.
Why the Next Generation Polo Championship?
The Next Generation Polo Championship grew from Fatima's interest in the players who will eventually become the faces of Nigerian polo.
While established tournaments provide important opportunities, she saw room for a competition specifically designed to place emerging players at the centre of attention. The Championship was created to give younger talent a platform where they can compete, gain experience and begin building their own stories within the sport.
But the ambition goes beyond simply creating another tournament on the calendar.
Fatima wanted to create an experience capable of welcoming people who may know little or nothing about polo. Her vision is for someone to attend for the first time, enjoy the atmosphere, understand the sport and leave curious enough to return.
That approach means looking at the complete tournament experience, including hospitality, food, lifestyle, sponsorship and media, while ensuring that the competition itself remains at the heart of the event.
The Championship's theme, “The Future of Polo. Elevated.”, captures the philosophy behind the project. It is about giving emerging players a bigger platform while presenting polo in a way that can speak to a broader audience.
For Fatima, the inaugural edition is therefore not an endpoint. It is the first step towards building a platform that can grow with the players it was created to support.

A Vision Beyond the Championship
Fatima's ambitions extend well beyond one competition. She hopes the Next Generation Polo Championship can develop into an established annual event and eventually become one of Africa's leading platforms for emerging polo talent.
Her vision is for young players to look forward to competing in the Championship, for brands to see genuine value in supporting the development of polo, and for spectators from outside the traditional polo community to feel comfortable entering the sport's world.
The same ambition informs her plans for Phoenix Polo Company. She hopes to work with polo clubs across Nigeria and eventually throughout Africa, helping tournaments improve their commercial structures, attract stronger partnerships, strengthen media coverage and create experiences capable of sustaining themselves over the long term.
The larger objective is to help close the gap between the quality of the sport itself and the way its commercial and media potential is presented.
“There is a lot of potential in African polo. I want Phoenix to be one of the companies helping unlock it.”
That statement perhaps best captures what Fatima is trying to build. Her interest is not simply in organising events, but in helping create an ecosystem where players, clubs, patrons, brands, spectators and other stakeholders can benefit from the growth of the sport.
The People Behind the Journey
Despite the ambition behind her projects, Fatima is quick to recognise that building something new is never a one-person effort.
Family and friends, members of the polo community, players, teams, advisers, sponsors, partners and countless people working behind the scenes have all contributed to bringing the vision to life.
For her, that support has been particularly important during the inaugural edition of the Next Generation Polo Championship. Launching a new platform inevitably comes with uncertainty, and having people willing to offer advice, make introductions, contribute ideas and believe in the concept can make the difference between an idea remaining an idea and becoming something tangible.
Fatima sees the support surrounding the Championship as more than backing for a single tournament. To her, it represents confidence in the possibility of creating something lasting for the future of polo.
What Comes Next?
The first edition of the Championship may have opened the door, but Fatima is already looking beyond it.
There will be lessons to learn, details to refine and new challenges to overcome. Yet her ambition remains centred on the same idea that inspired the project in the first place: creating more opportunities for the people who will shape polo's next chapter.
For Fatima, success will ultimately be measured by more than trophies or the number of matches played. It will be measured by whether young players receive opportunities they might not otherwise have had, whether new audiences discover the sport, whether brands become more willing to invest and whether Nigerian and African polo become stronger as a result.
Fatima Babangida Mohammed is choosing to build the platform for the generation that comes next.
